“It would take a lifetime to know all of the love I have to give you” - Lifetime

2011 started off pretty slow, but during the past month, a hand full of phenomenal albums have been released. New albums from NEEDTOBREATHE, Ben Rector, Gavin DeGraw, Will Hoge and Jon McLaughlin have all been completely dominating my iPod, and lesser known artists could easily get overlooked with so many good records and so little time. Steve Moakler’s Watching Time Run won’t be overlooked though. It doesn’t beg to be heard, it demands it. The album opens up with “Waiting,” which for a few seconds  has a baseline similar to John Mayer’s “I Don’t Trust Myself With Loving You” then totally shows that it’s really not cool with being compared to other songs. With such a promising opener, you might be worried that you are in for a letdown – trust me – you aren’t.

This album has a lot of style to it. Some parts country, some parts sugary sweet pop and there are some “jerk the wheel” ballads in here too. The writing is solid, Moakler’s vocals are spot on and all in all, it’s a damn fine record. It’s a perfect album to bridge the gap between the previously mentioned albums and say, Gift Horse. It’s the right album at the right time, pick it up and thank me later.

“With a whisper you can fill my heart with summer’s golden hopeful sunsets” – Gigantic

Some secrets are meant to be kept. The new EP by Quiet Hounds is not one of those secrets.  Apparently, the members of Quiet Hounds want you to know little more than the fact that they amp up the “spacious rock’n'roll.”  Some say they’re Atlanta based, but then their bandcamp page mentions Austin. There are no names attached to anything and in interviews they’ve used only letters to differentiate the band members.  So there’s some debate over WHO the members actually are, because right now they’re pretty damned vague about it.

Either way, one listen to the Night Parade EP and you’ll get why I want to know more. Each song is catchier than the last and every time I listen, I walk away with a new favorite. I’ve been listening for about a week now, and I can honestly say that each of the 5 songs has been my favorite at some point. Hard to believe each of these songs were written AND recorded in a two week span. Who does that these days? Well, the mystery band from Atlanta…or um, Austin does. That’s who.
