“You’re either digging or your dead” – Close Your Eyes and Count to Ten
Never Trust a Happy Song may not be the most original album out this year, but I’d argue that a lot of albums are original pieces of shit. Grouplove isn’t breaking new ground on their debut full-length but they’re following their influences pretty closely. And they’ve made a pretty sweet album in the process. It’s a shame I am only now getting around to giving this album a proper listen – because this album was made for sunshine. Boston in November doesn’t provide much of that, but I’ve still been punching repeat on “Spun” at every opportunity. Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper handle all the vocals, and the tradeoffs are perfectly placed. If you love the tiny desk concerts over at NPR the way that I do, Grouplove’s is HIGHLY recommended.
