“Nobody sleeping, the past was just creeping through the door that you locked” - Falling White Flowers
I love Boston. I do. But damn if Joe Firstman doesn’t make me miss Charlotte more than I could possibly put into words. Other than family, only a few things can do that and Firstman is definitely right up there with the Avett Brothers, Bojangles breakfast and Carolina basketball games.
Though he’s probably best known for his stint as a late-night bandleader (Joe worked as the musical director for Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC), anyone who’s seen him live or given his original music a listen knows that he’s much, much more than that. The first time I saw Joe live, he was barefoot and solo and unbelievably raw. His voice sounded the way Jack Daniels smells, and the entire room shut up and stood in awe. Charlotte audiences aren’t known for being the most polite music fans, but this guy made everyone take note immediately.
The War of Women is still one of my favorite albums, and the first line of that album gives advice that every man should hear ( “didn’t you tell me that women are only as evil as you let them be” ). Joe’s now seven albums deep, and his latest, Swear it was a Dream, is easily the best since TWoW. Joe’s also been working with The Cordovas, who released a pretty badass album a few months back too. All in all, it’s a banner year for Joe Firstman.
